‘Tis the season for online dating! According to Match.com the peak season for online dating is between Christmas and Valentine’s Day. If you’ve been thinking of making the jump or rejoining the online dating community, now is the perfect time.
Here are 10 Steps to A Successful Online Dating Season!
Step 1: Choose the right dating site/ app for you.
There are hundreds of different sites and apps for dating now a day. You can go as broad as Tinder (over 50 Million People are on the app) or find a niche site that serves more of your interests.
Here’s what you have to keep in mind. You get what you pay for. When you choose a paid for site like eHarmony or Match, you will find people that are much more serious about finding a relationship. The downside is that you won’t have as many options.
If you’re looking for more quantity than quality, the free dating sites/apps are still a great place to find dates and love. You will just have to vet through your options better.
Step 2: Figure out what you want.
Most people go into dating and are ok with just seeing where things go, but you should be dating with a purpose. Even if that purpose is just to have some fun and find some companionship.
No matter what you’re looking for, serious or casual, you should identify your intent before you create your profile. By knowing your intent, you’ll be able to weed through your matches and qualify your dates prior to going on them – as to not waste your time or theirs.
Step 3: Choose the right pictures!
We are visual creatures and your pictures are the cover to the book that is who you are. Choose the wrong book cover and you’re not selling any books.

Men, choose pictures where you are standing or sitting up straight, alone, and looking confident. Don’t make your main picture one where you smile.
Step 4: Write an intriguing profile.
If you’re on a site that provides a full profile, this is your chance to show potential matches what you have to offer. Click here to read my full recommendations.
If you’re on a swipe site (tinder, bumble) – write something brief that will either peak the other person’s interest or show them what you have in common. You don’t have to get to specific. Just 3 or 4 sentences will do.
Step 5: Make Contact.
OkCupid recently conducted a study of their users messages and determined that the most effective messages were fewer than 100 characters. On first contact, the simpler the message, the better. Click here are a few options for you.
Step 6: Drive the message forward.
Don’t get stuck in pen pal perpetuity. Send a few messages back and forth (not more than 10) and then exchange phone numbers.
Research shows that there is no correlation between online chemistry and offline chemistry. You want to drive the message forward and meet sooner than later. Here’s why.
Step 7: The phone call.
If you’re not comfortable immediately meeting someone you met online, the phone call is a good way to get to know each other better. It’s where you can further establish chemistry via banter or shared interests.
If you’re looking for a serious relationship, this is a good time to further qualify your match. Ask them what they’re looking for, and share about yourself in more detail to make sure your intent matches before you meet or waste each other’s time.
Step 8: Make an actual date.
If you’ve gone through all these steps, make an actual plan for a real life date. One where you meet in person at a specific day and time and can sit across from each other and get to know one another.
I know this sounds really simple, but this is where people fail to move the message forward. They’ll continue to text and call, but not make the plan to meet.
Step 9: Make a good first date impression
You only have a few minutes to make a great first impression and you’ll need to wow your date on multiple levels. First visually; show up presentable, yet comfortable as you would 10 dates in – not just on a first date. You want to be yourself.
